Adding An Item To Gain An Extra Life

Traditional games usually start with your character having 3 lives. How about adding a special item your character can get that will earn them an extra life? Instead of this item being a heart, what about a brain or a cat (because cats have nine lives :) Remember you don't just have to give one, you could make one item give 12 if you really want to.
